Support Your Fruit Tree

3. Support the plant.

Herbaceous plants require no support at planting time, but most woody plants can use it to advantage. All trees should be supported with 3 guy wires. All large shrubs should be provided a stout stake. Even bare branches catch a lot of wind. The constant buffeting of an unsupported plant will tear out new root hairs almost as fast as they form. Firm support also prevents the future plant from growing out of shape.

Stakes should remain through one full growing season. Trees should remain guyed 3 or 4 years.
